Tesla fell behind by a few points in a recently released owner satisfaction survey, with other companies like Rivian, Porsche and Jaguar ranking high on the index.
J.D. Power last week released its 2024 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study, which measures owner satisfaction with their vehicles after 90 days of ownership. The index surveyed responses from 99,144 owners of 2024 model-year vehicles and noted that satisfaction with mainstream brands is on the rise after failing to resonate with consumers in past years.
Tesla received an overall score of 870, down from 878 in the previous ranking. 2023 APEAL SurveyMeanwhile, original equipment manufacturers such as Porsche, BMW, Dodge and Ram saw their scores increase year over year.
“Traditional automakers have been listening to their customers,” says Frank Hanley, senior director of vehicle benchmarking at J.D. Power. “They’re introducing improved vehicles that are more in line with what customers want, whether that’s better interior storage, higher-quality materials or making features easier to use.”
“When it comes to BEVs, recent launches by traditional manufacturers have outperformed long-time leader Tesla in owners’ levels of emotional attachment and excitement about their new vehicles.”
J.D. Power also notes that the survey was conducted between July 2023 and May 2024, based on vehicles registered between April 2023 and February 2024. The 2024 publication of the APEAL marks its 29th year and asks vehicle owners to consider their satisfaction with 37 separate vehicle factors.
Infotainment systems ranked lowest among all categories evaluated, with an average score of 823, but still saw a five-point improvement over last year. Vehicles with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay saw their rankings improve across the board, with average scores of 832 and 840, respectively.
Despite Rivian and Tesla receiving high scores in the overall rankings, both automakers and Polestar missed out on awards because their brands did not meet the study’s award criteria.
“To be eligible for an award, there must be at least three models that account for 80 percent of market sales in a particular award segment, or four models that account for 67 percent of market sales,” J.D. Power said of the awards eligibility criteria. “No awards were awarded in the small car, midsize luxury car, large car, large luxury car, small sporty car, or midsize sporty car segments because these criteria were not met.”
