The First Descendant clearly borrows a lot of concepts from other games like Warframe, but it also takes it a bit too far, as seen when it was discovered to use some UI icons that are nearly identical to those in Destiny 2. These were later changed.
Now, The First Descendant is introducing its first new hero since launch, Luna, but, um, the same issues are cropping up here.
Luna is a music-based hero who provides a variety of buffs to her team, and if you think of Lucio from Overwatch, just take a look at the weapon they both share.
But there’s more! Nexon showed off the new Luna skin yesterday, different In the hero shooter game, namely Marvel Rivals, her name and hairstyle are essentially the same as Luna Snow, an ice-powered K-pop idol who debuted in another game a while back and also appeared in the comics.
So, I’ll ask the question I’ve asked before: Plagiarism or Homage? Previously, there was a sniper rifle in First Descendant called Different Dream, which very closely mirrors the aesthetics of the Destiny 2 weapon Sleeper Simulant and can be seen as a homage.
Here? I mean, Blizzard doesn’t own the concept of a music based hero with a music based speaker gun. Also, I don’t think she’s a healer, but she does provide buffs to the rest of the team and is clearly a support character just like him.
As for Luna Snow, the hairstyle in question here is an optional cosmetic, not her default, so this is likely intended as a homage to the Korean Marvel hero (Nexon is a Korean company). And, um, the name is the same, except without the ice powers.
In fact, I generally think that The First Descendants is do not have It mirrors characters from other games too directly in terms of design and concept – at least, nothing like this. This seems a bit too close to those two games in the sense that you wouldn’t call Viessa Emma Frost or anything like that. Other characters like Bunny, Valby, Freyna, etc. are pretty independent in my opinion.
Will anything be different here? I don’t think so this time. Strictly speaking, nothing has been “stolen”, it’s just… very close to something else. Luna will be released on August 2nd.
