Protect yourself from nasty bites. Dean Cecil broke out in hives many times and never knew what was causing it. He eventually discovered it was from eating beef and hamburgers. Even more bizarre, Dean’s doctor said the allergy was caused by a tick bite. When he pulled the tick off his body, it was a light brown tick with a white dot on its back. The most distinctive feature of the Lone Star tick is the star-like white spots seen on the adult female. While other ticks spread bacteria that cause more widely known diseases such as Lyme disease, a bite from this kind of tick can cause a variety of problems and it’s not just meat allergies you have to worry about. They can also spread diseases such as ehrlichiosis, which can damage the brain and nervous system if left untreated, and the Heartland virus, which can cause fever, fatigue and joint pain. Lone Star ticks were once found mainly in the southeastern United States, but with a warming climate and especially the increase in the local deer population, that’s changing and many northern states, and even parts of Canada, are becoming very hospitable environments for these ticks. As with other tick species, using an effective insect repellent is one of the key ways to prevent tick bites. The most effective repellents for mosquitoes and ticks contain 25 to 30 percent DEET as the active ingredient. Based on Consumer Reports’ latest exclusive testing, recommended repellents include Benz Tick & Bug Wipes, Benz Tick & Bug Wilderness Formula Pump and 3M Ultra-Thin Repellent. All eight offer good protection. Andrea Flores KCRA 3News Another convenient way to protect against ticks is to wear clothing.
