The Sony Bravia XR X90L is an LED TV with full-array backlighting, so it’s not spectacular on the specs sheet, but its real-world performance and ease of use make it one of the best buys on the market, based on ZDNET’s testing. This Sony TV is technically comparable to its highly popular 2023 rivals. TCL QM8 and Hisense U8KHowever, these are mini LED TVs and while they look like better TVs on paper, the Sony X90L has better color accuracy than the TCL and Hisense TVs, is bright enough, and has a much better remote control.
Thanks to Sony’s long partnership with Google, the X90L also comes with an excellent implementation of Google TV, making the X90L’s software interface much easier to use than Samsung’s Tizen or LG’s webOS, both of which can be overly complicated and frustrating to navigate.
The X90L also has Sony’s excellent image processing that upscales content to 4K, which is especially useful for watching older content or YouTube videos, and is better than what Hisense and TCL offer. If you’re looking for a TV to watch movies on, the X90L will rival most expensive TVs. Organic EL Premium QLED TVs cost almost twice as much, and if you’re upgrading from a TV that’s at least 4-5 years old, you’ll be amazed at the picture quality of the X90L, which also requires far fewer tweaks out of the box than other TVs.
Of the big five TV brands, Sony has the most advanced picture processing technology, which means the image isn’t overly saturated or overly bright, like models from Samsung, LG, TCL, and Hisense do. This means Sony TVs often have better picture quality than higher-end competitors from lower-cost TV makers (Hisense and TCL), and can often compete with more expensive models from premium vendors (Samsung and LG).

Sony X90L could be a mini-LED rival from TCL and Hisense, as well as a 2024 successor Sony Bravia 7 — but it does a good job of utilizing Sony’s advanced backlighting system to brighten certain parts of the image, bringing out sharper details in the shadows of dark movies and shows. I use the X90L in a brightly lit room and never once wished the image was brighter.
Of course, Sony products are often priced 10% to 20% higher because they carry the Sony brand name, so it’s important to look for sales and special offers like the ones we featured on Amazon.
