How to play with strands
The New York Times’ Strand The puzzles are a play on the classic word search. In the NYT Games app, Wardle and connection (This is also featured in the Daily Guide Forbes Games).
There is a new game Strand You can play every day. In the game, you’re presented with a 6 x 8 grid of letters. Your goal is to find groups of words that have something in common. You’ll get a hint as to what the theme is. When you find a themed word, it will be highlighted in blue.
You also need to find special words called spangrams, which show what words have in common. A spangram connects at least two edges of the board, but doesn’t necessarily start or end there. Theme words are not proper nouns, but spangrams can be. When you find a spangram, it will be highlighted in yellow.
Each letter appears once in one of the themed words and spangrams. Letters can be strung vertically, horizontally or diagonally and can even switch direction mid-word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess.
Once you’ve found three valid words of four or more letters that aren’t part of the theme, the Hint button will unlock. Clicking it will highlight the letters that make up one of the words in the theme.
Beware: don’t get carried away! Sometimes you’ll need to fill in missing words in a phrase, and other days the game revolves around synonyms and homonyms. The difficulty level varies from day to day, and the creators of the puzzles may try to surprise you.

The rest of today Strand The theme word is…
- peat
- Hilarious
- Winnie
- fill in
- game
- Buzz
- Hairy
- atom
The finished grid looks like this…
I didn’t have many clues here so I unlocked the PEAT clue on the top left. That didn’t help much so I unlocked the second clue to get the letters FILL, which at the time I thought were homonyms of the name (Pete and Fill). I found GALE (Gail) on the right, confirming my suspicion.
That’s when I saw the spangrams blocking out the words HAIRY and MERRY on the right, then RUSTLE on the left, leaving me with the words WHINNY and ATOM.
I used two clues and the fourth theme word I found was spangram.
