FORT WORTH, Texas – Finding an attractive combination of speed, defense and college-level refinement, the Cleveland Guardians selected Oregon State infielder Travis Bazzana with the first overall pick in Sunday’s Major League Baseball draft.

Shortly after the celebrations began at the historic Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the Guardians had selected Bazzana, a 21-year-old Australian product who hit 28 home runs, stole 16 bases and had a 1.479 OPS with the Beavers in 2024.

The Guardians selected Bazzana over fellow speedy infielder JJ Weatherholt of West Virginia and several college power hitters. Bazzana, who spent his childhood in Australia playing cricket and other sports, is expected to establish himself as a first-of-one this year and move up the minor leagues quickly.

But he’s focused on baseball and could soon join All-Star perennial Jose Ramirez in Cleveland’s infield.

Bazzana batted .360 over three seasons at Corvallis and was named Pac-12 Player of the Year. He joins Adley Rutschman (Orioles, 2019) as the only Oregon State players to be selected first overall.
