The virus caused by the “world’s most dangerous” creature has been confirmed to be spreading in several counties in New York state.
In late June, the Rockland County Health Department The first West Nile virus outbreak occurred in 2024.

The infected mosquito was collected from a town trap in Orangetown on or about June 10 and submitted for testing on or about June 17.

Since then, Rockland officials have confirmed that 34 “mosquito swarms” across the county have tested positive for West Nile virus.
These towns in Rockland County have mosquitoes that spread the West Nile virus.
According to the Rockland County Health Department, “mosquito pools” have tested positive for the virus. The numbers next to each town indicate the number of pools where positive tests have occurred.

West Nile virus confirmed in Oswego and Suffolk counties
The virus has also just been discovered in Oswego and Suffolk counties, health officials said.
In Oswego County, West Nile virus was detected in mosquito samples collected in the town of Hastings.
On Long Island, the virus has been confirmed in Cold Spring Harbor, Melville, Lindenhurst, Holbrook, Port Jefferson Station, Bohemia, Commack, Nesconset, Rocky Point, Riverhead and Aquebaug.
“We urge everyone to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, especially those over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems,” the Suffolk County Health Commissioner said.
Cases may be underreported
Health officials believe many New Yorkers may be infected, but the illness often goes unreported because most cases are mild and resolve before a doctor’s visit.

“Bites from mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus can cause severe illness and even death,” the Rockland County Health Department said.
West Nile Virus can cause serious complications, including neurological disorders, or it can cause milder flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and sometimes a skin rash and swollen lymph nodes.
Officials are warning people to seek medical attention immediately if they think they have symptoms of West Nile virus.
