Following a slew of leaks, Samsung is expected to release a major beta update this week for One UI 7. Based on what we’ve seen so far, how do you feel about the changes?
Samsung’s take on Android has always been quite controversial, but at the same time, it’s the most popular in the world. The last major redesign was when One UI debuted in 2018. Alongside Android Pie (9.0), the update has been widely hailed as a big improvement over TouchWiz, mainly because it brought a unified refresh to the company’s Android skin and highlighted some really nice changes, like improved one-handed usability and much-improved design in cluttered areas like the Settings app.
Since then, Samsung has been tweaking the design with each new generation along with adding new features.
Now, alongside the release of Android 15, One UI 7 is set to be Samsung’s biggest skin revamp since the original release of One UI – and it’s been met with mixed reviews to say the least.
One UI 7 leaked a lot Over the past week, some details and photos of Samsung’s upcoming changes have been revealed. For more details, please see the reports from the past few days. But to summarise, there are about half a dozen notable changes.
- Updated home screen icons
- Use Android’s Status Bar Tips like iOS’s Dynamic Islands
- New battery indicator that shows percentage on tablets
- Option to display home screen icons without names
- Redesigned Camera App
- Updated the lock screen shortcuts
- Notifications and quick settings are now displayed in separate panels
Aesthetically, One UI 7 looks at least relatively similar to One UI 6, but the number of functional changes is quite surprising. The new “Dynamic Island” clone, split notifications, and Quick Settings panel follow trends that are becoming increasingly common in Android skins, while many other changes, like the appearance of home screen icons and the ability to hide app names, feel like they’ve been lifted straight from Apple’s recent designs and features.
Perhaps the best change, at least in my opinion, is the redesigned camera app, which is now much better suited for one-handed use.
But how do you feel about it?
Samsung’s new design is sure to draw mixed reviews from longtime users and onlookers alike once it’s fully released, but in the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts on what we know so far.
