Baldur’s Gate 3 was the overwhelmingly popular winner of the 2023 GOTY award, but in spite of From Alan Wake to Zelda, it’s been an incredibly competitive year. But now fans are simply idea Developer Larian could, or should, make a new Fallout game.
This is based on a wordy quote from Larian CEO Swen Vincke, who talked about what they wanted to work on before Baldur’s Gate came to fruition.
“Without triple-A production costs, budgets, marketing, all the triple-A stuff, it felt like there was a glass ceiling that you just couldn’t break through.” Vincke said on Edge.“It would have been Ultima, it would have been Fallout, it would have been Baldur’s Gate. There weren’t many to choose from.”
Of course, this was many years ago – Larian began development on Baldur’s Gate 3 back in 2016, eight years ago(!). This was after Fallout 4 in 2015 and before Fallout 76 in 2018, and the series had arguably lost its way (it was awful when it launched, but over the last six years it has been reborn as a solid game with a great community).
Fans are sticking to this statement, even though Larian is talking about an idea that’s eight years old. Fallout fans Hungry A big Fallout game doesn’t include 76. Many people want a traditional single player experience. And the game is pretty outdated technically. But the thing is, Bethesda spent five years on Starfield and will spend several more years on Elder Scrolls VI. They’re Intention We’re planning on making Fallout 5, but at our current pace, it might not be ready until 2030.
Fans are basically hoping another studio will make Fallout New Vegas, Obsidian’s beloved mid-game. Fallout is now owned by Microsoft, and Obsidian is also owned by Microsoft. who They could make a faster Fallout game there, and if not Obsidian, they could make it at another studio they own. But… what about a studio they don’t own? Could they make a deal with Larian and make their next game a new Fallout?
Don’t get me wrong, I want this to happen and, honestly, They are To be honest, I think Microsoft is a better maker of Fallout games than Bethesda at this point. should Trying to get them involved.
But the realities and logistics of this are incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Larian is reportedly moving on to two other RPGs already in development after leaving the Baldur’s license with Wizards of the Coast. And let’s assume that Microsoft pays them a ton of money (or just buys them out, as they often do) and lets them start making a Fallout game tomorrow. How long do you think it’ll take Larian to make a full Fallout game when it took them (obviously) eight years to make Baldur’s Gate 3? Well, at least 2030+ years. And that could be around the time Fallout 5 comes out.
A smaller scale Fallout game akin to New Vegas that isn’t mainline from Larian would be welcome, but given the current situation, I don’t see that happening.
