Capcom announced last month Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Announced (what?) during a Nintendo Direct, the collection of games will bring back seven iconic titles from the Versus series, all playable on modern platforms with online play, new training mode features, and more.
Due to major licensing hurdles, a relationship that had reportedly not been great for a while, and several other factors, most fans believed that a Marvel vs. Capcom and Versus series collection of games was virtually impossible to achieve. Nevertheless, Capcom and Marvel made it happen, Dexerto Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto expanded on this matter, revealing that Capcom is indeed keen to create new crossover games with both Marvel and SNK.
Since the Marvel vs. Capcom collection was announced, fans have been eager for more details on what this all means for the future of the franchise. Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui announced as DLC guest characters The arrival of Street Fighter 6 Season 2 seems to pave the way for Capcom vs. SNK 3, but is it something that could realistically happen?
Dexart posed that very question to Matsumoto from the get-go, and the Street Fighter 6 producer responded.
“The development team at Capcom has big dreams,” Matsumoto began. “There may be a chance we can make a new Marvel vs. Capcom game. There may be a chance we can make a new SNK game based on Capcom.”
“I don’t know. But even if that were to happen, it would take some time and effort to create and release such games. But what we can do now is at least reintroduce our legacy games from the past to new audiences — people who may not have had a chance to play them because they weren’t released on modern or current platforms,” Matsumoto continued.
According to the Street Fighter developers, this all comes down to increased exposure and interest from fans old and new. Matsumoto says that if people become more familiar with these series in this day and age, there may actually be an opportunity to create new games like Marvel vs. Capcom or Capcom vs. SNK in the future.
Matsumoto made it very clear that he and the team at Capcom really love these classic fighting game series. In fact, he said that Capcom has wanted to re-release these titles for years, and the time was finally right to develop Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
What’s even more interesting is that Matsumoto revealed that not only have Marvel and Capcom been in talks for years to make this collaboration happen, but that Marvel is well aware of how much fans love the Versus series and Marvel vs. Capcom. In fact, their recognition of how dedicated a fanbase these games have and how big the competitive scene still is is what got them on board with creating this collection in the first place.
“[Marvel was] “Marvel is also on board, so it’s kind of like the stars aligned,” Matsumoto explains. “The timing was great to make this actually happen, and we’re all super excited. What inspired us to make this happen was Marvel’s interest in community-based tournaments like EVO.”
Yes, the potential for new Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK titles is now stronger than ever, and the bond between Capcom and SNK is even stronger today. SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos re-release.
