Moviegoers are slamming AMC Theatres after discovering unauthorized fees added to their concession receipts.
TikTok user Kikntiger detailed his complaints in a video titled “Pretty weak move from AMC Theatres.” clip It has been viewed 1.2 million times since Thursday.
In it, he describes how he ordered popcorn and two large drinks for about $24, then was charged an additional $2 delivery fee on top of the usual $1 service charge.
“Shipping fees in cinemas are insane,” he wrote next to the video.
“Companies are losing control over their fees,” Kikuntiger said in his 45-second speech.
“This is for the movie theater concession stand, you know. This is not DoorDash!” he said incredulously, pointing to the popular food delivery app.
Kikntiger, a movie fan and TikTok user, slammed AMC Theatres after he noticed unauthorized fees on his concession receipt.
My order of popcorn and two large drinks came to nearly $24, but they charged me an additional $2 delivery fee on top of the usual $1 service charge.
“This is at my local cinema, where the only way to get snacks is to have them delivered directly to your seat,” Kikuntigar continued.
“You can’t just go up to the snack counter, order what you want to eat, and then walk to the theater with it. So, yeah, fine, but you’re going to charge me $2 just to deliver it 25 feet away from the kitchen?”
“So you’re not going to drive me to my house. And there’s a $1 service charge? For what? For the privilege of ordering food?”
Kikuntiger said he felt he had to speak out in this case because the $2 fee is unavoidable when buying food at the AMC stores he frequents.
“I understand the discounted rate is high and I don’t mind it, but charging an unavoidable $2 fee is ridiculous,” he said at the end of the video.
The post garnered a lot of sympathy from other online followers.
“Just bring your own food. There will be no testing whatsoever. You can literally bring in a bag full of food and drink,” one commenter advised.
“I used to work at an AMC Dining Inn and even I don’t understand the reason for these charges,” another user added.
“Are they going to start charging refills on sodas and bagging fees on popcorn?” a third wondered.
Others were not so keen on Kikuntiger’s complaints.
“I’d be willing to pay $2 for it if I’d pay $7.50 for Coke Zero,” one person speculated.
“Hey, if you want them to work for free you have to let them bring the work to you while you sit back and relax. Hey, stop being a Karen, Ken,” a second added.
AMC Dining locations charge a $2 delivery fee and a $1 service charge, which is unavoidable.
Adding fees doesn’t seem to be a new idea, with a Reddit thread discussing the topic back in 2021.
“After ordering DINE IN theater tickets online, I was asked if I wanted to order food in advance. I thought this was a useful new feature. When I ordered the food, it showed the price, plus a $2 delivery fee. I wished they’d actually shown me this, so I canceled my order,” wrote a Reddit user.
The poster suggested that the fee should be included in the total price of the items ordered, rather than listed as an additional charge at the end of the invoice.
“This is absolutely ridiculous – this is a dine-in where the idea is to order food and have it delivered to your seat,” they added.
Adding fees doesn’t appear to be new, with a Reddit thread discussing the topic in 2021.
A check with Dine-In AMC locations confirmed they were adding $3 to each meal order, and according to the TikTok video, the charge consists of a $2 delivery fee and a $1 service charge.
AMC locations without dining options will charge a flat rate of $1 for service.
